Simon Catling taught in several primary schools in London, UK, including a deputy headship, before moving to Oxford Brookes University, where he was Professor of Primary Education and tutor in primary geography in the School of Education. Widely experienced in primary teaching and teacher education, he held roles as Dean of Education and Assistant Dean for programmes and research development. In 1992–3 he was President of the Geographical Association in the UK. With more than 225 publications, he has written for children, students, teachers and researchers on geographical education, presented at national and international conferences, contributed to developments in primary geography, and run many teachers’ continuing professional development programmes during his career. His interests include children’s geographies, the nature of geography, sustainability education, citizenship and social justice, and children’s voice in primary geography. Though he retired formally from his university post in 2012, he remains actively involved in geography education, for instance as a member of the Geographical Association’s Early Years and Primary Committee. He has contributed to England’s national curriculum geography developments since the 1980s. Simon Catling was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus in 2012.
